The Vice Chancellor of UBD, Dato Dr Hj Zulkarnain will be visiting the UK on the 18 January 2012.

Hey everyone as you all may or may not know, it's that time of year again and Worldfest is coming up! Worldfest is a festive week usually in the last week of February where Kent Uni celebrates the diverse cultures present in our uni. It's generally great fun with a world market, language taster sessions and dance workshops. Worldfest ends with a student showcase and last year we emerged victorious as champions in the "Best Cultural Performance" category.

We hope to retain that title however we need your support. We need a total of 18 students (9 boys and 9 girls) as "performers", however if the limelight's not for you, volunteers and general supporters are always appreciated. So show your Bruneian pride and come join us at our first BruKent Worldfest prep meeting on the 28th January, Grimond Seminar room 5 (GS5) at 7pm. The Worldfest event will take place on the 26th of February this year!

Choosing your housemates.

Don’t rush into sharing a house with the people you don’t really know well.

Can you afford to pay the additional bill face?

Letting agent

Don’t rush into signing an agreement or pay too much money upfront. Take time to find the right house.

Fees and deposit

Administrative fee range from £50-£100
Holding deposit
Security deposit

References and guarantor.

A guarantor is someone who willing to be responsible for payment of your rent if you don’t pay it. (Usually close relative).
The guarantor needs to be sure that if they agree to do this.
Some letting agent accept University as your guarantor.

Tenancy agreement.

The agreement is likely to be ‘Assured Short hold Tenancy Agreement’ which last for six months.
It is important to try and negotiate the length of contract you require at the outset.
Get the tenancy agreement checked first by the student union advice service, your parents or a solicitor.
Do not pay any money to the landlord until the whole group happy with the contract.
Check whether the holding deposit is refundable if you decide not to take the property.
Get a receipt for any monies paid to the landlord.
Joint contract- all names on one contract. You are jointly and severally responsible for the condition of the property.
Landlord may be charging the same price for every room. This is not always fair if the rooms are different sizes. If you feel the room is too expensive for a smaller room, agree the price before you sign the contract and make sure you get it in writing. Your rental figure should feature on the tenancy agreement so check that it has been amended with the new rent when you finally sign.

When you first move into a house, it is a good idea to make a detailed inventoru (list) of content of the house and what condition they are in.
It is advisable to take photographs of the house on the day that you move in and on the day you move out.

living in a shared house.

Paying the bills.

It is advisable to inform the utility companies of the date you intend to move into your property and also the when you move out.
You should make a note of your meter readings on the day that you move in and on the day that you move out to avoid paying for the previous tenant’s bills.
Try to have each tenant’s name on all utility bills. However if this is not possible you will need to come to an agreement with a responsible person in your group.

Semoga kita dalam perlindungan Allah S.W.T. selawat serta salam buat junjungan besar kita Nabi Muhammad S.A.W.

Sempena Maal Hijrah 1432H ini saya ingin mengucapkan selamat menyambut Maal Hijrah buat semua muslimin dan muslimah. Marilah kita bersama-sama memanjatkan kesyukuran kepada Allah S.W.T kerana kita masih lagi dapat merasa nikmat-nikmatNya yang cukup besar iaitu iman dan nikmat Islam. Begitu juga nikmat kesihatan dan kesejahteraan yang telah di kurniakan untuk kita. Izinkan saya disini untuk mengkongsikan sedikit pengetahuan.

Dari Ibnu Abbas R.A. yang berbunyi:

“Siapa yang membaca doa ini pada 1 Muharram, Allah akan mewakilkan dua malaikat memeliharanya pada tahun itu.”

Doa akhir tahun dibaca beberapa minit sebelum masuk waktu Maghrib

Doa tersebut bermaksud:

“Ya Allah, wahai tuhan kami, perkara-perkara yang telah kami lakukan daripada perbuatan-perbuatan yang Dikau larang dalam tahun ini maka kami belum bertaubat daripadanya pada hal tuhan kami tidak meredhai dan tuhan kami tidak melupakannya dan tuhan kami berlembut tidak mengazabkan kami malah memberikan kami peluang sampai kami bertaubat selepas kami menceburkan diri melakukan maksiat itu maka kami sekalian mohon keampunan mu. Ya Allah ampunkanlah kami. Dan mana-mana perbuatan yang telah kami lakukan sepanjang tahun ini yang tuhan kami meredhainya dan tuhan kami telah pun menjanjikan ganjaran pahala kerananya maka kami sekalian mohon ya Allah, tuhan yang mempunyai kebesaran dan kemuliaan semoga tuhan kami perkenan akan perbuatan (amal bakti) yang telah kami lakukan itu dan tidak tuhan kami hampakan harapan kami, ya Allah tuhan yang maha pemurah.”

Doa tersebut berbunyi:

“Ya Allah, wahai tuhan kami. Dikaulah tuhan kami yang kekal selama-lamanya, sedia ada lagi permulaan. Kelebihan Mu maha besar dan kemurahan Mu amat limpah yang sangat-sangat diharapkan.

Tibalah sudah tahun baru, kami mohon kepadaMu agar terpelihara kami sekalian di dalam tahun baru ini daripada tipu daya syaitan dan bala tenteranya.

Dan kami mohon daripadaMu akan pertolongan menghalangkan runtunan nafsu amarah (nafsu yang mendorong kepada jalan-jalan kejahatan).

Kami mohon juga kepadaMu ya Allah akan rasa sedian ingin membuat kerja-kerja kebajikan yang boleh mendampingkan diri kami kepadaMu. Ya Allah tuhan yang maha agung lagi yang maha mulia. Ya Allah tuhan sebaik-baik yang mengurniakan rahmat. Barang dicucuri rahmat apalah kiranya ya Allah dan juga sejahtera atas junjungan kami Nabi Muhammad serta keluarga dan sahabat-sahabat baginda sekalian. Segalan pujian itu bagi Allah tuhan pentadbir seluruh alam.”

Barangsiapa membaca doa ini daripada waktu yang telah tersebut maka berkatalah syaitan kesusahanlah bagiku dan sia-sialah pekerjaan ku mengoda anak Adam pada tahun ini maka dibinasakanlah dengan satu saat jua. Dengan sebab membaca doa ini diampuni Allah sekalian dosanya yang setahun ini.

As of last Tuesday by 4pm, Only 4 people have officially registered and paid for the BruKent’s Paintball event. Since the paintball game requires at least 8 people to make it happen, regretfully, it has to be cancelled. Those who have paid will be refunded in full.

EDITED 22/11/2010: Registration for most sports is now closed. Basketball registration has been extended to the 5th of December. Those who have registered should have received an email stating the payment details where relevant.

Ladies and Gents! We welcome you to BruKent's Hari Raya Celebration! Since the last one was postponed. We created another one for formality. We have a lot in store for you and it will be amazing! Bring along your friends as well, the more the merrier. All are invited to come!

As informed, firstly, this is a potluck event, so if any of you guys want to contribute feel free to do so, just leave a comment here on what kind of food you're going to bring so it will not clash with our dishes as well as easier for proper arrangement. Currently we have 12 multicultural traditional meets contemporary dishes. Some of those are Kuih Malaya, Briyani Rice, Black Pepper Chicken and more! (We don't wanna spoil the surprise ;) )

Bruneian Students who are still searching for accommodation or have got a place of stay in either Canterbury or Medway campuses could you please give us a follow-up on the matter. Failure to do so will cause us difficulty in keeping track of people who have or haven't got a place of stay. It's not just for our convenience but yours as well so please keep us updated on this issue. People who haven't got an accommodation, you are highly recommended to apply for the waiting list for on-campus accommodation as you may aware, there are numerous students as well searching for off-campus houses. Rather you have a back-up plan than sorry.

We also like to inform you guys that we are already doing the best we can to accommodate and help you guys in any shape and form. Despite the lack of resources, we are still searching solutions for you people such as contacting all the necessary agencies including letting agents and even the accommodation office at UoK. so just bear with us alright. We also highly appreciate your own initiatives in finding a place. Thank you peeps.

After one long month of curbing desires, fasting till sunset, keeping discipline in terms of watching one’s manners; how to act in front of others and say only great things to people in the name of the Almighty, Alhamdulillah we finally arrive to the month of which we are to celebrate the sheer success of the great deeds that we did in the holy month of Ramadhan! A celebration which involves a lot of traditional and modern delicacies and attires. The sights of friends and families visiting each other houses either by carpooling or in a convoy, just to catch up with things that were left behind and essentially seek forgiveness of the past wrongdoings, the “green envelope” (who doesn’t want that? ;P), just smiles and laughters all the way through. A glimpse at the BruKent Sungkai Get-Together!

As we know, the Bersungkai Get-Together was held last Thursday, on the 26th August 2010 in conjunction of the holy month of Ramadhan and to celebrate the initiative of close ties between seniors and juniors by BruKent Society. This unprecedented event was held at the Coffee Zone in Gadong branch of which 21 individuals had come to break their fast together with the Brunei Kent family. The event was casual and easygoing with seniors catching up with friends as well as having sharing sessions with the soon-to-be juniors at the University of Kent. People were all smiles and laughters, which is a good thing!

The atmosphere was kept quite light and informal so to speak. The buffet set menu was not disappointing as well. The restaurant gave a selection of scrumptious delicacies with the awaited chocolate fountain with fruits and marshmallow as desserts. Some of the main courses were Fried Rice, Chicken with Sweet Tomato Sauce, Ginger Sweet Soy Sauce Beef, Sweet and Sour Fish and assorted fresh vegetables aromatically cooked. The breaking of fast was later followed by more discussions on matters concerning Kent and its surrounding. All in all, a good start for BruKent Society before going back to Kent. There will be more activities in University of Kent InsyaAllah. So, see you all there soon! =D

The Pre-departure Briefing will be held on Wednesday, 25th August 2010, at HRD, Bangunan Fakhriah, No 157 Jalan Kumbang Pasang, Bandar Seri Begawan, BS8411. Brunei Darussalam. It will be conducted at HRD Services Office on 2nd floor at the presentation room. It is intended for new-comers/new students who are preparing themselves to be an international student for the first time. The briefing will take 2 hours from 3pm till 5pm. So please come if you need assistance or have any inquiries before you leave for Kent.

The annual Education UK exhibition will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 at the Sutra Function Hall, Level 4, The Rizqun International Hotel, Gadong from 11:30 hrs until 17:30 hrs.

17 UK education institutions are taking part in the exhibition. One of them will be University of Kent. Also taking part are local organisations such as the CfBT Education Services Sdn Bhd, HSBC, Takaful IBB Berhad, Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Unit, Public Service Department and the Scholarship Unit of the Ministry of Education.

Sorry for the delay, we've just received updated information from MOE. If your society is still interested in participating, the confirmed date for the orientation is on Saturday, 14-08-10, 8 am - 2 pm, at MOE (Persidangan 1). We're expecting around 145 undergraduates to be present, and please be reminded again that the presentations need only be 5 minutes long, and tables will also be available should any society want to set up booths. It would be much appreciated if you can e-mail the presentations earlier to our Assistant Information Secretary (information.assistant [at] bsunion.org), or just bring them on the day itself and hand them to the Assistant Info Sec (Adzimin Amin). Dress code should be smart casual (no jeans). I might've missed out on a couple of details, so feel free to ask any questions :)

Majlis Bersama Rakyat and Civic Course

The Deputy Director of Scholarship Department, Ministry of Education, Awang Haji Azis bin Haji Nayan emphasized in the meeting held Monday, the 12th of July 2010, that it is important that students who are under the government scholarship, should be present at the Taman Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien, Bandar Seri Begawan, on Sunday, 25th July 2010 for the Majlis Bersama Rakyat or get-together ceremony with His Majesty to commemorate the 64th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. A designated area will be specially allocated for scholarship students during the ceremony. Students are required to come for the ceremony. Our presence at the ceremony will not only to celebrate joyous occasion but also to express our appreciation as subjects of His Majesty and citizens of Brunei Darussalam which is blessed with peace and prosperity.

It is understood that the Civic Course will possibly start on the 1st August 2010 of which there will be further notice given by the Scholarship Department of Ministry of Education soon. The information was provided briefly in the meeting (12th of July 2010) as well.

Berita baik bagi pengemar-pengemar nasyid!!!

Pertandingan Nasyid,yang dianjurkan oleh Komiti Keugamaan Suruhanjaya Tinggi Negara Brunei Darussalam, akan berlangsung pada 5 June 2010 bertempat di Brunei Hall.

Pertandingan ini bertujuan:

Untuk Merenungi lagu-lagu nasyid, yang mana kita tahu banyak bertemakan Islam.

Untuk mengeratkan sillaraturahim antara pelajar-pelajar dan juga penduduk-penduduk Brunei Darussalam yang berada di United Kingdom.

Membuka pengalaman bernasyid.

Peraturan-peraturan Kemasukan:

Warga Negara Brunei Darussalam.

Kumpulan hendaklah tidak melebihi 5 orang.

Setiap kumpulan nasyid hendaklah mempersembahkan satu buah lagu samada lagu nasyid tradisi atau lagu nasyid modern dan hendaklah disampaikan dalam masa tidak lebih dari lima minit. Nasyid tradisi bermaksud lagu yang mengandungi unsur-unsur antaranya bayati, nahwan, sikah, ras, sobah dan hijaz. Manakala lagu nasyid moden ialah lagu selain daripada lagu tradisi tetapi hendaklah tidak termasuk rentak seperti rock, heavy metal, Jazz, Hip Hop dan Rap.

Seni kata lagu hendaklah dalam bahasa Melayu, Inggeris (English), Arab ataupun gabungan bahasa-bahasa tersebut.

Pakaian para perserta hendaklah sopan dan sesuai dengan nilai-nilai islam serta menutup aurat.

Peralatan pembesar suara akan disediakan. Alat-alat music seperti gendang bolehlah di bawa. Cekera padat (CD) juga boleh digunakan.

Perserta-perserta akan di anugerahkan sijil penyertaan dan kepada pemenang-pemenang pertandingan ini akan menerima Hadiah.

Keputusan Pengadil adalah muktamad semasa pertandingan nanti.

Nama kumpulan, nama-nama perserta, lagu yang akan di sampaikan dan number telephone ketua kumpulan hendaklah di hantar semasa mendaftar.

The AGM'10 was held last Wednesday and the events on that day were:

Lucky voter prize random pick goes to Ida Patera.
Presentations by the President Rahman Ahmad Ismail regarding the past events such as Maulidur Rasul, National Day, Chinese New Year; upcoming events like BruKent race, Easter Picnic with MBsoc, Visit to Medway; and other issues that being mentioned are the new official Logo for BruKent and T-Shirt for Brukent 2010. For the 2011 there are few events that being proposed like National Day 2011 events that possibly sponsered by International Office that will accomodate the whole University of Kent and the BruKent Cultural Showcast.
There are also feedbacks and suggestions from the BruKent members. They're suggesting Malay Theatre, Inter-Society Sports and Games, Quranic Circle and Qiamulail, Summer BBQ in Brunei, Cyber Games and Sky Diving for Charity.

The Annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, 31st March 2010. It will take place at Keynes Lecture Theatre 6 (KLT6).

Events on that day will be:

New election for 2010/2011 committee.
Prize Presentation for the logo competition winner and lucky voter.

Hi everyone!

Winner? Competitive? Does that sound like YOU?

Up for a CHALLENGE and some F.U.N.?

Well lucky you, BruKent Society will be organizing a BruKent Race.

Basically it is a mini type of Amazing Race that you watch on TV but its our very own BruKent Race. This event will be held at University of Kent on the 3rd of April, Saturday. We decided to do this event a week before the final term because people might be going back home by then.

Registration fee: *2pounds for members
*3pounds for non members

Limited to only 15 teams. each team consists of 2 members. This is a first come first serve basis. So grab a partner and quickly register!!!!

The winner for the logo design will get to win a prize. Not only that, one lucky voter determined by a random selection will also stand a chance to win a prize! To vote please read the rules and regulations.

Each member is eligible to vote for one logo only.
